March in South Carolina
March is a special time in South Carolina. It’s a historic time that has a lot to do with horse races. Here are a few of the events going on in South Carolina in March.
Shuckin’ in the Park Oyster Festival
This is the 8th annual Shuckin’ in the Park Oyster Festival in Moncks Corner. This is great little festival in Berkeley County where families can get together and have a good time.
Charleston Festival of Houses and Gardens
South Carolina has several of these festivals at different times of the year. This gives the community a time to get together and socialize and learn more about their community and neighbors.
Aiken Horse Trials
When people think of horses and horseraces, they don’t normally think of South Carolina. But South Carolina has a long history of great horseraces. Camden and Aiken are known all over the world for their horseraces. Aiken is in the heart of South Carolina’s Thoroughbred Country and hosts the Aiken Horse Trials. This is a major social event in South Carolina.
St. Pat’s in 5 Points
For some reason, St. Patrick’s Day is a huge deal in Columbia - especially in historic 5 Points. This is a festival for everyone. Families are welcome. There are good bands and great food available. Make sure that you visit this event at least once in your life.
Battle of Charleston
This re-enactment shows how life was during the Civil War and how the soldiers lived. This is a great way to learn more about the history of South Carolina.
RenoFest
This festival is located in Hartsville in Darlington County. This festival showcases the great musical heritage that South Carolina has to offer. It mainly focuses on the bluegrass music of South Carolina. This is a must see festival.
Scottish County Fair and Celtic Festival
This is one festival that I have wanted to attend. I have heard that it is a great festival that celebrates the Scot/Irish heritage of South Carolinians.
Aiken Steeplechase
The Aiken Steeplechase is another horserace that celebrates the thoroughbred history of South Carolina.
Victory at Fort Watson
This event gives an insight to how Revolutionary War heros lived. Fort Watson was a British fort built on an old Native American mound that the South Carolina Patriots captured.
Summerville Flowertown Festival
This is a huge crafts festival - sometimes touted as the biggest crafts festival in the Southeast. This is a great festival to go to. Summerville is one of the nicest and best looking small towns in South Carolina.
Carolina and Colonial Cup
This Camden horserace is one of the biggest social events in South Carolina. If you go you’ll see Southern gentlemen in seersucker suits and ladies in beautiful sun dresses. You’ll feel as if you’ve gone back in time. This is a great event in a great small town.
Cooper River Bridge Run
This is the 30th annual Cooper River Bridge Run. Tons of South Carolinians go to Charleston to experience this bridge run across the Cooper River. Make sure you make your reservations soon because everything in Charleston will be booked up - if it isn’t already.
