Today, South Carolinians in Charleston will honor Gen. Moultrie in a ceremony at White Point Garden. This afternoon a statue of Moultrie will be unveiled at the garden. Carolina Day events will include:
7:00-7:15 AM: St. Michael’s and St. Philip’s ring bells.
11:00 AM: Gibbes Museum open for morning tour.
12:00-12:15 PM: All church bells ring.

Carolina Day, June 28, commemorates the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. This particular battle was an early victory for the Americans. South Carolina, the battleground of freedom, had more Revolutionary War battles fought on its soil than any other colony. That is one reason why Carolina Day should be important to all South Carolinians.

Thomas Ravenel has entered an out-of-state drug treatment facility in Arizona. Ravenel’s attorneys informed the U.S. Attorney of Ravenel’s trip to Arizona. U.S. Attorney Lloyd stated that they do not consider Ravenel a flight risk. Ravenel must return to Columbia on July 9.

Today, Governor Sanford issued his budget vetoes to the House and Senate. Last year he vetoed the entire budget and the General Assembly quickly overrode most of his vetoes. We’ll have to see how the General Assembly reacts to his budget vetoes when they come back to Columbia.

Governor Sanford will be issuing his budget vetoes tomorrow. The governor feels that the current budget growth is unacceptable.
Governor Sanford toured the state today. He spoke in Florence, Charleston, and North Augusta about his views on state spending. Stay tuned for a recap of the governor’s vetoes tomorrow afternoon.

According to The State newspaper, the General Assembly has just passed a budget. This budget will include such items as lowering income tax rates and getting rid of the grocery tax.

Governor Sanford has named Ken Wingate as Interim Treasurer following Thomas Ravenel’s suspension. According to SC Politics Today, Wingate, 47, is a CPA and attorney with Columbia-based Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow.

South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel is facing charges of conspiracy to possess with the intent distribute cocaine. I have to say that I was absolutely amazed by the charges when I read them. Governor Mark Sanford has suspended Ravenel from his post.
